October Featured Member - Athena of Earth's Energies

This is another interview in a monthly series of featured members from the POEST team. These interviews are a great way for you to get to know our team and its members, as well as get some great information and advice from seasoned Etsians!

This interview is with Athena of Earth's Energies.

What is your Etsy shop address and name? Where else can we find you?
EarthsEnergies.etsy.com - For now it's just on Etsy.

What is the main thing you make and sell in your store? What else do you make and/or sell?
Pagan inspired original hand-drawn wood burned boxes is the main item in my store. I also make sculptures, altar tools and devotional items for ritual, as well as woodburn breadplates that can be used in ritual for the great rite.

How and when did you get started with arts and crafts?
I was inspired to create one of my first designs as an assignment(A sculpture of Hermes)
for a class, and every since that day 6 years ago, my muse has been present.

Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from everything, everywhere, and from many people. I can be watching television, reading a book, and it will inspire me to create something. There's a park across the street from my apartment building and on most days, I get to walk through the park and soak up its grounding energies. It helps to open the way for inspiration...I often like to daydream, meditate, or when on a plane...I love getting the window seat and just get flooded with ideas and inspiration to create, so I'll jot down the idea. When I work with a clay medium, I never know what I will create with it; It's such an inspiration to get my hands immersed in a fresh mound of clay.

What are your favorite materials?
Clay, Wood, and right now, I'm trying out some recycled materials. I like working with acrylic and glass beads for toppings on my boxes. I love the enchantment of working with glitter. It's so sparkly and reminds me of flickering stars. I craft with glitter as I view it to be a representation of the divine spark illuminating everything we touch. It's one of my favorite finishes on my items.

As a member of the Pagans of Etsy Street Team (POEST), tell us a little bit about your Pagan path and what being Pagan means to you, especially with regards to your art or craft. Every since I was a young girl, I've felt like a Pagan...my aunt used to call my sisters and me Heathens because we'd dance on Sundays instead of going to church.
My parents believed in freedom of religious choice as long as you weren't harming anyone. I've always been interested in the dual nature of religion. I knew physically there was a mother and father, and always wondered spiritually where the mother was to the god...I didn't know she was called 'Goddess' until some 26years later.
I've been on the Pagan path traditionally for 10years. I've done my solitary studies as a means to find my true religion. I've studied many other traditions and the Wiccan path resonated within me.

For me being a Pagan is a magickal and spiritual experience for me. I like connecting to deity, being able to channel my energies. I love performing rituals, drumming, dancing, playing music, and enjoying the freedom of being in nature, walking the earth and feeling the energy of life, and the ground beneath my feet. When I'm crafting, I'm working with the true essence of the sources available to me. The earths natural sources has an energy that breathes and pulses. A majority of the time, when I try to craft from an idea or recreate a piece, it doesn't manifest itself as I see it, so when I'm crafting, I'll close my eyes and just let go.

What advice would you give to beginners in your art or craft?
Follow your inner muse. Don't make excuses for your art. Be fair when critiquing your work. If you think it's finished and to your standards, then it is. Remember your work is one of a kind, even if it's similar to someone elses' work. Don't be afraid to get the asking price for your work.

What advice would you give other Etsy sellers and those interested in opening up a shop?
Let all your friends and acquaintance know you have a shop on Etsy, network, market your shop locally. Don't expect to become an overnight success. Don't panic if you don't sell anything right away, or if it slows down. Take regular inventory of your merchandise. Don't be wary of looking at many of the other Etsy sellers that aren't in the Everything Else category. There's lots of amazing sellers on the site. Don't hesitate to convo with other sellers. Never be afraid to ask for advice about your shop or ideas. AND..........
Never, Never, Never Give Up.

Is Etsy a full-time job? If not, what else do you do to pay the bills and how do you balance Etsy with that and other things in your life?
No not yet. I work as a freelance Fashion Stylist for magazines, and am looking to work as a costumer for television and film.

Being able to freelance has given me the balance to do both my craft and my work as I'm still involved with extra curricular things with my coven and school. I like to keep busy and enjoy all that I'm doing. I make sure to give attention to Etsy and my craft every few days out of the week.

Crème Féerique / Faery Cream

Autumn is a time for introspection and...inspiration. For me, it is time to reconnect and work deeper with the Underworld and the Faery Realm.

We often forget about our Fairy Godmothers yet these loving & caring beings of light help us and protect us on a daily basis. So I decided to celebrate them with a Crème Féerique (Fairy Cream in french) loaded with love, sweetness and natural goodness...I believe it's "Faery Approved" ;).

This cream is handmade with organic sweet almond oil infused with real Madagascar vanilla bean, natural/unrefined cocoa butter (which has a natual chocolate-like scent), unrefined beeswax, organic aloe vera gel, whole milk powder (fairies love milk), vitamin E & a Faery blessing.

It smells wonderful and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do...

Autumn Blessings

Just a little seasonal meditation to share . . .

In the quiet stillness of late morning she arrives.

Her voice, still soft, has been whispering in the leaves for days. Yet today I hear her breathe deep, stretch and I catch her scent, distinct in the quiet air. She is ready. She is ready to assist my world in its journey to darkness and chill. She is ready to put to rest all that is exhausted. She is ready to guide the green divas back to their fair realm of the underworld. She is ready to help us rest, but not before abundance is recognized, honored and blessed.

Her voice, still soft, whispers, “Get to work little one. Get to work.”

Ashe. Ashe. Beautiful autumn blessings to you all. Enjoy the Bounty!

September Featured Member - Erin from BadraBoutique and Hijabi

This is another interview in a monthly series of featured members from the POEST team. These interviews are a great way for you to get to know our team and its members, as well as get some great information and advice from seasoned Etsians!

This interview is with Erin of Badra Boutique and Hijabi.

What is your Etsy shop address and name? Where else can we find you?
BadraBoutique.etsy.com is my etsy store. Badra is the Arabic women's name for Full Moon. I also make clothing for Muslim ladies at Hijabi.etsy.com. And my main website is BadraBoutique.com. You'll find things on there that I didn't make, too. lol.

What is the main thing you make and sell in your store? What else do you make and/or sell?
I mostly make clothing for festivals, rituals, SCA and other fairs. I love to make magickal items, like applique'd altar cloths, and other goodies. I'm also the maker of Ruby Moon Menstrual Pads. (which I think I'm out of right now, but will have some more in stock very shortly) I also crochet and knit and make snuggly warm things through that medium. I make horns for your head, awesome bags for magickal items that you might like to wear on your being. I sometimes work with clay and papier mache . Around Yule, I will have pagan ornaments for your Yule trees.

How and when did you get started with arts and crafts?
I grew up with a very crafty mother and grandmother, so it might be in my blood. LOL I started in the 1980's. I was one of those new wave types who grew up on Duran Duran and Depeche Mode in high school. I wanted to wear all the weird clothing and my mom simply wouldn't buy it for me, so I started making my own clothing in the mid 80's. Soon my friends were asking me to make things for them too.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Movies movies movies. ok, and some tv shows. LOL. I'm a huge fan of fantasy movies and some tv shows like Robin Hood on BBC. When the LOTR museum exhibit came to Houston, I think I spent most of my time examining the tiny details of the costumes displayed.

What are your favorite materials?
Anything natural, cottons, linens, rayons, etc. I buy fabric by the bolt when I can. I think I have more fabric in my shop than a lot of fabric stores! LOL.

As a member of the Pagans of Etsy Street Team (POEST), tell us a little bit about your Pagan path and what being Pagan means to you, especially with regards to your art or craft. I've been a pagan/witch for 23 years now. I'm of the Taureleo path... no not taurus and leo. Taureleo is of the Quenyan language and means Forest Shadow. I guess the easiest way to describe my path is that it's very neutral, recognizes both light and dark magicks, and is very green. By green, I mean very natural, one with the earth, organic, greenwitch like. It's also a little Dianic in the way that we are a Matriarchal lead path. But we do recognize the God and do have men in our covens. Paganism to me is not only a religion but a way of life. I feel I am one with the forest that surrounds me. And I am part of it as it is part of me. Same with magick. I don't feel like I *use* it...but am instead part of it as it is part of me. I have my very neglected Taureleo website at www.taureleo.org if your'e interested in learning more about what my path is. It needs a lot of updating tho. LOL.

What advice would you give to beginners in your art or craft?
Learn the Pagan Student Bill Of Rights. And please don't read anything by Silver Ravenwolf and take it seriously. Her books are contradictory in unto themselves. LOL. Search for good teachers and don't believe everything you read or hear. NEVER stop learning and always question everything no matter what.

What advice would you give other Etsy sellers and those interested in opening up a shop?
Go for it. What have you got to lose? and last but not least,.... you'll never know unless you try it... so just do it. :-)

Is Etsy a full-time job? If not, what else do you do to pay the bills and how do you balance Etsy with that and other things in your life?
Yes, for me, Etsy is my job. I'm a stay at home, work from home, homeschooling mom and wife to a wonderful Asatru husband who supports all my crazy ideas. lol. I have two shops, my normal one and I also make clothing for Muslim ladies on my other shop so if you see scarves , etc that look Muslim on my site, yes, I make their clothing as well. They have been the most wonderfully positive people I've ever met in my life and nothing like the negativity you see on TV. LOL. Other things I do... I'm an avid organic gardener, lover of books, and owned by my brat cats. LOL. Many magickal blessings to everyone!

Using Pendulums in Spell work

Hi, Im Andee, of http://celticgoddessjewelry.etsy.com and I am a newly active member of Pagans of Etsy! Have you ever used a pendulum for divination or healing? They work wonderfully for both. But just this year I have also been using them for spellwork. Depending on the spell or the goddess energy I am working with, I make a custom pendulum to use. I select the stones and charms for their metaphysical properties, the time of week and month I am doing the spellwork and the specific intentions of the spell. In addition to my etsy shop, be sure to check out my gallery information site at http://celticgoddessjewelry.com. There you will find information about pendulums and using them in the more traditional sense. Blessed Be~ Awaken your goddess within!

Happy Lughnasadh!

Lughnasadh (or Lammas) is the Celtic celebration of the grain harvest. It is named for Lugh, a Sun God, whose name means "The Shining One". Lugh is also a God of Fire and Crafting. Here is my version of Lugh, dressed in a cloak decorated with suns and holding a globe of light and a sheaf of wheat. (print available on my website www.magickmermaid.com)

How and when did you get started with arts and crafts?
I have done arts and crafts since I can remember. I have always loved "making" something or other. One thing that I can remember making in Kindergarten was a clay mouse. I loved that clay mouse up until it mysteriously disappeared. I'm not sure if my mom put it away or it accidently broke and she had to throw it away, I just remember loving its
ears!! LOL

Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from everywhere and nowhere. I use the color theory for my pieces, sometimes. Mostly I like to just roll with ever comes up that needs to be created

What are your favorite materials?
I love metal, wire, glass beads, gemstones, clay, felt, and just about everything.

As a member of the Pagans of Etsy Street Team (POEST), tell us a little bit about your Pagan path and what being Pagan means to you, especially with regards to your art or craft.
I was raised Southern Baptist and went to church rigorously. I never felt what everyone felt, you know, the presence of the Lord, so I stopped going about ten years ago. My best friend, where I lived previously, was a practicing Wiccan and I found great comfort from her and she introduced me to Wicca as I had a very great interest in it. Since, I have been studying online and as a sole practioner. The Wiccan Rede is what caught my attention and I strive to live by it every day. As Wicca and Paganism are not always the most reverent of practices, I am still trying to figure out how to incorporate my love for them in my jewelry and felt creations.

What advice would you give to beginners in your art or craft?
Research, practice, practice, and practice. There is no such thing as failure and if everyone were to do what they love and loved what they did, we would all be much happier.

What advice would you give other Etsy sellers and those interested in opening up a shop?
Make sure to read through all of Etsy's guidelines and make sure this is something that you truly want to do and not just because everyone else is doing it. Be ready for commitment and make as many contacts as you can. Also, remember that Etsy is not the only outlet for selling your creations. Most of all, never give up and always persevere.

Is Etsy a full-time job? If not, what else do you do to pay the bills and how do you balance Etsy with that and other things in your life?
Etsy used to be full time for me, but not now. I am a partner in a drywall business, have an accounting company, and work part time at a candy store/warehouse. After almost losing my five year old due to a drowning accident, I am now only concentrating on positive things, of which, Etsy has not been for me. I add my items but have pretty much strayed from the full time status that I had going.

A. Zapps Expedition VI in TW

The continuing saga of Antoinette Zapp's quest for her mother Athena in the mythical utopia, Herland (first documented in 1915 by Charlotte Gilman Perkins of the yellow wallpaper fame)continues ephemerally in the etsy treasuries. In chapter V, Antoinette met a kindred spirit, Isabelle originally from Herland but kidnapped by air ship pirates and wanting to return to the greens of the elusive Herland. Antoinette is inspired by her stories of her life in Herland and how she became the captain of a pirate airship after having been kidnapped by them. Their relationship may deepen as they continue on in their search for Athena. http://www.etsy.com/treasury_list_west.php?room_id=14845
This is a shot of Antoinette itching to get going on her expeditions with her brother Alphonso and his future bride Beauticia Periwinkle at A&A Zapps Purveyors of Esoteric Artifacts, taken before chapter 2 in etsy Treasury West: A. Zapp Expeditions, pursuing the vision.

June Featured Member - Alchemille!

This is the second interview in a monthly series of featured members from the POEST team. These interviews are a great way for you to get to know our team and its members, as well as get some great information and advice from seasoned Etsians!

Our second interview is with Alchemille, proprietor of Alchemille's Garden.

What is your Etsy shop address and name? Where else can we find you?
My shop's name is Alchemille's Garden and can be found at Alchemille.Etsy.com
I also have a website at AlchemillesGarden.com
And a Blog at Alchemille.Blogspot.com
Currently my products are found exclusively on Etsy.

What is the main thing you make and sell in your store? What else do you make and/or sell?
I mainly sell artisan tea blends, natural skin & bodycare as well as botanical incense. All natural and made with herbs (organic, pesticide-free and ethically wildcrafted). My teas and bodycare items are freshly made upon request.
I'm also working on a small line of natural cosmetics: I currently have a loose face powder and lip balms but should carry tinted lip balms (more like lipsticks) soon.

I also plan on going back to sewing and painting a little (I have degrees in art and fashion), so you should see some accessories (knit and sewn) and art pieces appear within a few months...

How and when did you get started with arts and crafts?
Well I've always been the artist and the dreamer of the family. My parents have plenty of drawings, paintings and poems that date back to my childhood. I started making more elaborate paintings, clothes and accessories in highschool (where I graduated in applied arts) and naturally continued exploring my creative side in a fashion school (I have a degree in fashion and textile design). I started learning about herbs 15 years ago on my own and it took a long time to realize that it was my true passion.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Nature is my main inspiration, with a good dose of spirituality, music, gardening, litterature and art. I find that I'm more creative when I stay away from magazines and media in general.

What are your favorite materials?
Herbs of course! There are so many ways to use them and experiment with them. But I also love fabrics, yarns, paper/books (I've always been fascinated by writting and the power/imaginative force behind words)...I like raw materials that are just waiting to be given a shape, a life and a purpose.

As a member of the Pagans of Etsy Street Team (POEST), tell us a little bit about your Pagan path and what being Pagan means to you, especially with regards to your art or craft.
I've known (or sensed) since childhood, that there was more to life than meets the eye. That life had to be more than people's everyday routine. My spiritual awakening (and beginning of my journey) happened when I was 18, I felt a deep change and an unusual peace without any apparent reason but I didn't recognize myself. 1 or 2 years later, I met a girl (who has become a very good friend of mine) who opened my eyes on esoterism. She had some knowledge about wicca and I was glad to have found somebody at last, who could answer my questions and quench my spiritual thirst. Wicca and witchcraft was interesting but not my thing. I continued with angelology and kabbalah which helped me developed my senses. It's only after I got married, moved to the USA (I'm french) and met my friend Marie (who owns a spiritual shop) that I got deeper into spirituality. Psychic-mediumship has done a lot for me and has given me great comfort. I was now able to communicate with the other side: family, friends, ancestors, loved ones...And slowly overcome my fear of death (I've had a couple close calls in my life). But my true path, which started 2-3 years ago, is shamanism which I have found to be my call and the missing link between so many things. When you see life through the eyes of the shaman, everything starts to make sense and you can see the bigger picture.

Being a "woman of the land", I feel a natural connection with celtic/faery shamanism.

What advice would you give to beginners in your art or craft?
My advice is to be passionate about what you're doing. This craft requires to always learn and improve your skills. I am aware that it requires time, patience, devotion and commitment (you learn all your life). Build your knowledge from different sources. You may or may not agree with everything you read and choose to work with some herbs instead of others. Don't be influenced by fads and fame. Trust yourself and your intuition. There's no need to learn about hundreds of herbs, it's better to know a few trusty herbs well...This is the path of the wise woman ;).

What advice would you give other Etsy sellers and those interested in opening up a shop?
Etsy has done more for me than other (and more widely known) places. I've had my shop for a little bit more than 2 years now and it's doing a little better each year. I'm also proud & blessed to have a few faithful returning customers who have allowed Alchemille's Garden to grow and the adventure to continue...I've been blessed with a good start right away while I know some newbies don't have this luck. Just remain positive and patient, things will come to you.

Is Etsy a full-time job? If not, what else do you do to pay the bills and how do you balance Etsy with that and other things in your life?
Etsy is my only job. Though I am working on a series of classes on Shamanic Herbalism that I should start teaching in the Fall (to complement my herbal creations). I would also love to do healings and readings but I don't feel quite ready yet.

MySpace Update

Hey guys - just wanted to make a quick post to let everyone know I've finally got around to taking over the POEST MySpace.

http://www.myspace.com/pagansofetsy

If you haven't added us as a friend there yet, please jump on over and do it already!

I've set the Top Friends to a larger number, and put it on Random, so we all get exposure when people check out the profile.

I hope to have a cool layout soon, but I don't have the time today to find something good. Hopefully by the end of Thursday, though, I will.

If you have any comments/suggestions, please let me know! I want to make it awesome for everyone!

Fairy Door Listing

Fairies are all around us, and while some of them live in forests, many of them live among humans.
